Coman Hill excells at the handoff from nursery school to Primary school. There's a Get To Know Your School program for preschoolers, so they've experienced the school and ridden on a bus before Sept. Don't worry like I did -- CH seems to have the gift of making the child feel secure, with orderly routines and warm, even tempered teachers and aides. (Each class has a full time aide.) The class size is 18 to 22, and they are very supportive to lagging students. The teachers are great, the school is wonderful, and we're lucky to have it.

My very different children are thriving at Wampus Elementary. The teachers are great, and when my daughter's teacher left during a pregnancy the substitute was wonderful as well. She loved them both! Teaching today involves more interesting projects than in my day. When I was young I wrote papers on dull topics, which I copied from the encyclopedia. My children do projects you can't copy -- they write, illustrate, collect photos, write diary entries in the voice of historical characters they've studied, etc. Parents are invited for class presentations, choral concerts, and instrumental concerts (yes, they start instruments of their choice in 4th grade). Just as my childhoodl math curriculum wasn't familiar to my parents, the Byram HIlls math homework takes some getting used to. But state tests and 'No Child Left Behind' tests all use this style, so there's no avoiding it. Best thing: calm, supportive teachers.
